Academics Social Sciences
The Social Sciences Department, comprised of the disciplines of geography, history, family studies and law, continues to set a rigorous pace with a full slate of programs and field work. It is a firm conviction of the teaching staff of the department that practical experiences and fieldwork are integral parts of effective, relevant education.
Did you know that the Mimico Creek valley is a glacial spillway or that Bishop Allen would have been underwater 12,000 years ago as it is built on a glacial lake plain? These are among the fascinating facts our grade nine Geography students are learning as they study the landscape of southern Ontario. From history fairs and simulations to the sharing of foods from around the world, students in the history program are exposed to a plethora of meaningful and innovative activities. Students are given an opportunity to meet with a variety of guest speakers, including Canadian veterans who have participated in the Second World War and other peace keeping efforts.
In the senior Law program, students visit the Provincial Courts to see the law in practice. They have also participated in mock trial tournaments at both the TCDSB and provincial levels. Prominent guest speakers from the legal community such as Alan Borovoy of the Canadian Civil Liberties Association and Chief Justice Roy McMurtry have addressed our students.
