Academics – English Department
The English Department offers students an exciting and enriching program with opportunities to work on innovative and challenging projects. For example, the grade 10 students participate in a Media Expo, where they create a literary-themed media product and present it in a grade-wide school competition. Several writing contests are available to students throughout the year and students are always encouraged to showcase their work. Each year we visit The Stratford Festival in Stratford, Ontario, so that students may experience a live Shakespearean play. As well, thanks to our librarian Mr. Walker, we are able to invite students to participate in a celebration of language through the Festival of the Word by featuring visits from renowned authors such as Alistair McLeod.
Literacy preparation encompasses all subject areas. In order to help our grade ten students prepare for the literacy test, we provide them with an intensive study of all areas of reading and writing. We begin this analysis in grade nine and we continue with an intensive preparation program in grade ten. As well, the English Department conducts an after-school literacy program in the spring and in the fall.
Beyond our regular English program, Bishop Allen Academy is proud to be able to offer our students an Advanced Placement pathway. Advanced Placement classes allow our students to enrich their knowledge and experience, and they have the opportunity to earn university credit.
